Ok time to build the worlds LARGEST PINBALL MACHINE!

Just kidding, thats just a piece of plywood in the shop that happened to be in the shape of a pinball cab.
To note: This is a "BETA" build. Im putting this together so I can get exact plans and measurements for Haruman to cut me one out of melamine with a CNC.
This cab probably wont turn out super nice but it'll be a GREAT proof of concept.

So here is my rough "looks like a 4th grader drew em" sketch:

(those are interior dimensions BTW, example width says 13" but with the 2 1/2" sides its 14" wide)

Build the box with a $6 piece of pine:

Finish it up, and put in the trunk to take back to my house:

Start breaking down the computer/case and cutting ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up with tin snips and a dremel:

test fitting components:

Customize the power supply:

Drilled 2 holes, ran wires through, taped the wires in a few layers of electrical tape, put a bunch of layers of tape on the side I cut

Drillin holes n stuffs:

Moar holes:

The pine splintered A LOT, so time to break out the bondo and get this cab smooooooth like peanut butter:

Then sand it:

3rd round of bonbo/sanding!

2nd of 4 primer coats:

This is definitely going to be a learn as I go project. Im really happy how the sides turned out, you cant tell there the pine is on top of plywood!

Cant wait to F stuff up!

This is basically being built out of scrap pieces of wood, generally a proof of concept template basis for a CNC design. I get to put some color on the thing tonight, Im kind of excited

Is the final product going to be real machine dimensions, or you keeping it baby sized?

funsized. I could just measure my existing pins and get home measurements if he wants to make a real sized kit to sell but shipping alone makes that cost prohibitive for me.

Taped off the sides for paint:

First of 3 layers of rattle can black:

And yeah, I know the rear vent holes are completely ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up, but they are functional, and you cant see them anyway.

Masking removed:

With this paint job I almost want to call it HarleyPin:

And my rough/ugly intake fan cut out:

Thats also a good shot of where my doggies hang out when I play pinball.

This is probably ignorant to say, but because of your screen name, I always envisioned you looked like the wrestler Dean Malenko.... :laugh2:

This looks great man!

I've always wanted a virtual pin (or real one, but man, space is at a huge premium where I live).

Following this with interest!

Well I have 2 real pins but jeeeeeez is that an expensive hobby!

So I have all the buttons installed. Originally I was going to use leafs for the flippers and nudge but the leafs I have are for metal panels. Maybe I'll get microleafs for the final cab.

Squeezed everything in, but I need to improve wire management.

Totally shocked it all fit and still had room for the screen. I will be adding another fan for the CPU

Setting up the drives...

Its was a 23"  but I snagged the ribbon cable and ripped it so that monitor is in the trash. I replaced it with a 21" ASUS that has much better viewing angles, so not a total loss. There is a small gap to the left and right of the monitor but its not too terrible.

I also removed the coin button , and put a regular white button there and put a P1 start button for start.

Installed the side rails:

Dat Archer table:

Its a SUPER tight fit:

I removed the fan from the back, and put it next to the CPU heat sink. Air still flows out the back but now the CPU temps are much better.
I think I am going to make a back box for this, cuts down on "portability" but I think its worth having.

Still need to set up FuturePinball and all that jazz., I also need to cut the last piece of aluminum L for the front and find a way to make the corners a little more comfortable to rest your hands on, but its totally playable and my wife thinks it kinda great.

For 10+ years I thought you were a Juggalo and I was just too scared at the thought to mention it.

I'm not sure if finding out it was inspired by a wrestler is better or worse.

May have to shut off BYOAC for awhile....

3/4" x 3/4" Aluminum L bracket, cut to length.  total cost, like 6 bucks.

Yesh, designed to sit on a table not have super long legs to the floor.

Neat project!

What finish work? The finish might look OK in the pictures but it leaves a lot to be desired in the really real world.
Just because its a proof of concept doesn't meant it has to look like a turd wrapped in burnt hair though. :)

All I have set up on it right now is Pinball FX2 and it runs everything smooth like butter. I am starting the back box display prototype part then I'll start trying to get FuturePinball and the like running.

I am curious... Does Pinball FX 2 plays well with an FE? Since a tabletop pinball is one project I wanted to tackle eventually,  I was wondering if there was any way to launch individual tables and make uses of secondary screen with it... I haven't toyed with it yet, just been playing it on my Surface, which is far from optimal...

Hey Malenko. If you haven't bought all the Pinball FX2 tables yet, they're currently on sale on the Steam store. Most are 60%-80% off  8)

Thanks, I owned almost everything already but I picked up MsPloosion, South Park, Portal, Plants V Zombies, and Fantastic 4 for a total of $5.67

Cheers for the heads up on the steam sale. Starting my vpin build soon (weather permitting) so just starting to getting into the software side and building up a table library.

I thought getting an arcade setup was a ball ache. Pins are way more complex...

And we're back!

So I started setting up some visual pinball stuff, just to see how it ran. Since I have a real Comet pin I started with that one:

True story , my wife heard the music and said "why does that sound familiar?"

Then I tried out a fancy modded table, in this case Terminator 2: Chrome Edition

Everything ran pretty great so I decided to get started on the back glass screen. Found a nice 4:3 19" LCD in my pile, decased it, trimmed the metal as much as I could then built the bottom of the box:

Perfect fit!

Then I cut the top part, and put a groove in it for the frame (I'll bondo the groove on the outside)

Box is done!

Peg board backing, for both ventilation and cause it was yet another piece of scrap wood to use up

back home we go from my Grandfather's wood shop!

and here she is free standing. The back box will be hinged in the front with a latch in the back. There are holes from the bottom into the back box for wiring.

I will start putting the guts back in and trying to keep the wiring as tidy as possible. the Plan is to tuck as much power and video cable into the back box as possible to get the air flowing through the base of the pin cab.

EXCELLENT QUESTION!

I'm not! Both monitors have speakers and both boxes work kinda like base tubes, the sound was loud enough with just the play field screen's speakers so I think the 2 tiny speakers behind the peg board will be just about perfect. Once I get it all back together I'll try to get a crummy video made. If the sound doesnt work as planned I can still mount a 4" speaker near the front of the cab body and wire in a tiny amp or decase a set of desktop speakers.

Its really expensive and I missed the steam summer sale, right now its $150 for all the tables or $200 for all the pro versions. A good majority of the tables for Pinball Arcade are available through visual pinball/future pinball so its not likely to add Pinball Arcade unless somehow I can get the tables cheap. I might add it just for the free "Tales of the Arabian Nights" table. I already have like $50 spent for FX2 but that's like 45 tables :)   I am swapping out the 360 controller for an IPAC 2, so other than that $45 I've only spent about $10 on this build so far. I already owned FX2 on my desktop PC and play with a 360 controller :)

Liking this one a lot, wouldn't mine attempting something similar myself.
I'd love to see a Jr GingerBalls!
All joking aside, thats why I do builds. I get a lot of joy out of seeing someone getting inspired by something I built and making it even better.

To note, the play field plexi and side rails are not installed yet. I have to remount the monitor to optimize the experience and Id rather not do work that I'll just have to undo, to redo again in the future.
Other than software config, this project is nearing completion!

Pulled everything one last time, and restuffed the guts:

Mounted the backbox with LCD. It is still going to be bondo'ed and repainted, just not yet

Both screens on:

Figured since Comet is the first pin I ever owned, it should be the first one fully set up!

Sacred Stiff shown, the backglass is fully interactive with the game, the spider spins to pick the bonus when you make the skill shot

Backbox folds down, just like a real pin!

Gratuitous game shots:

Spiderman:

Terminator 2: (one of my favorite tables!)

and some goldeneye:

BONUS VIDEO MODE!
Here's a very short YouTube video of it running Terminator 2, just showing the DMD working on top of the backglass art on the second screen:

Also, Im playing with the keyboard cause my IPAC2 isnt here yet from divemaster.

You didnt stock up on minimus's man, since your going budget build sticking an ipac in that thing is kinda expensive.  Kade would of been perfect, i think there was even a pinball setup.

I have a few and i think Yot stocked up as well.....

total spare parts build. I was using a hacked 360 controller but it I cant nudge the table in pinball FX2 since the hack didn't have analog controls and you cant set specific buttons in PFX2. So I pulled that and wired in my Ipac from my box of parts. The Ipac kinda works, but it doesnt have the default keys set and I cant get the thing to reprogram so I'm replacing it (mostly because only like 5 inputs work ha!) I knew I was going to spend *some* money on it, Im just trying to keep it minimal.

Here's my cost breakdown so far:
little adjustable feet things: $4
Wood : $6
plexiglass: $10
Ipac: $48

So, still under $70 , not bad for what it is!

Yov've got my attention with this one fella, I love it!  I never thought I'd reconsider a Vpin again. Didn't we cop some criticism from some purists at ZapCon over Vpins, that freaky couple playing on  HaRuMaN's cab for a high score I think it was.

Anyway, it never occurred to me to build a mini Vpin.  Don't worry I won't even concept my own version till my other projects are well completed. That red paintwork....nice.

Mini is the only way to go on a Vpin. Full size costs way too much when considering the amount of play you'll actually put on it. With a mini Vpin, you can scratch that short lived Vpin itch affordably.

I agree. A playfield monitor for a full size is pricey. I've seen people paying over 500 for a TV. I got a 22 inch at goodwill for 20 dollars this past Friday, and most people these days have a small monitor laying around somewhere.

You just have to shop for deals, i got a 46" samsung for 300.00 ebay and 200 for a 32", i'm not that much of purist to go for the FEEL of playing a pinball, so i'm bypassing all of the solenoid knocker stuff to keep it in an upright cab range.

I'm just gonna stick with FP due to the BAM mode and call it a day.

Amazon had a 46" TV for 220 bucks this past weekend.

The real cost comes into play when you are seeking authenticity. Shakers, real DMD, knockers, etc.

Had it running for 3 hours, no heat issues. Fan on the bottom near the front pulls cold air in, both the CPU cooler and the power supply draw cold air in from that, and both the GPU fan and a big case fan on the back push hot air out. The angle of the plexiglass on top lets the hot air flow towards the back to be pushed out. Peg board on the back of the "back glass" box vents hot air away from that monitor.

Once everything is in place, I'll give it a real stress test and let 3DMark run for an hour or something and check temps but so far , so good *fingers crossed*

If I ever do a full sized cab, it'll get a baller plunger. For this, the button launch is good enough.

Bumping this thread because Its not done. Im about to dump more money and electronics into this thing, I really hope I can get it all to fit.
This is what the insides look like meow.

Might get shorter SATA cables and whatever else I can do to free up as much room as possible.

I spliced all the power cords together, wire nutted them off, then taped over. Im also going to be removing the front USB panel (its curled up in there somewhere) and just getting 2 short USB extenders since I dont need the extra ports, the devices just dont fit between the  mobo and the side of the cab.

Here's the front end (PinballX) WIP:

Still to do is to strip, prime, repaint, and seal the "rails"
possibly make a faux lockdown bar.
Add about a bajillion more tables
See if I can fit the top secret upgrade into the cab

Heres my hint for the top secret upgrade:

I saw melon's mini before, was partially an inspiration for this build. I'm going to try and machine a metal lock down bar but I'm probably going to steal his idea for "locking it down" or use magnets.

Sweet. Can't wait to see the toys you put in it.

Just 7 solenoids. I bought an 8 relay USB board and used up 7. Might add another for a knocker. Solenoids are set up to make contact at nearly the  end of stroke, keeps the effect from being too powerful for such a tiny pin. I still have a TON of kinks to work out (like why force feedback works on T2 and Comet but not on Elvira or Medieval Madness) but the foundation has been laid!

Solenoid boards installed:

SainSMart USB controller and all them power and ground wires done:

Big thanks to "thagerty" for wiring and config help.

I've been so busy adding feedback to my own cabinet, that I've missed this thread.

Looks great! Love the name! (me being a ginger can appreciate it)

So you were able to get all the solenoids working in DOF?  Ideally if you got your config files all sorted out, most tables would be good to go.....as long as you have db2s enabled on each of those tables! Its not a one config kind of thing. You may have to go into EVERY table and change the configuration in the "script" so that instead of using VPinMAME, it uses either B2S, or DB2S, etc....    Its the db2s server that DOF works through to fire your solenoids, so that's why you need to do this.  I did it for all of my 150+ Visual Pinball tables!

Solenoids work in DOF just fine. I only have 8 tables installed all with B2S running on them. Comet and T2 are my big go to test tables , Cause I have a Comet and I want a T2.

Tables I have that DOF works:
Comet
Terminator 2

Tables where DOF doesnt work:
Street Fighter II
Medieval Madness
Scared Stiff

Tables I have but havent tested DOF:
Simpsons
Simpsons Party Pinball
Tales of the Arabian Nights

I won't pretend to have the all in one answer here....but for tables that aren't giving you dof, open the script for the table.

You are looking for something along the lines of this:

Set Controller = CreateObject("VPinMAME.Controller")

and change it to this:

Set Controller = CreateObject("B2S.Server")

Try it...if it works then save the table!

Some tables may have some right at teh beginning of the script that will change this for you if you change an "option" to a 1,2,3 or 4.   Usually letting you pick between VPinMAME, UVP, B2S, B2S not mech sounds.

Give that a try.

You could also read threads like this, but don't look at me....I probably did things the hard way!   :)

Already did all that to get the backglasses working.  I think its just an issue with the table version I have. Seems my biggest issue is that I'm still using some older version of VP9 tables and I need to just stick with VPX tables. Just not sure the computer I shoved in the mini pin cab can handle it. Only 1 way to find out!

I do use the older versions of tables until a newer VPX version comes out. VPX tables are looking pretty good. Not quite Future Pinball graphics (with BAM new renderer), but still nice!

You can always have both old and new. If using Pinball X, just have a sub menu for only older VP9 tables, and another for VPX, etc...  That's what I have. Each of the VP versions have different sub menus, (VP9,PM5,VPX), while all of them combined have another menu, as well as all of them showing in my main menu of all systems.

Check out VPinball, VPUniverse, and VPForums. for newer VPX tables. If you want the newer Stern (SAM) tables (The Walking Dead), you need to install a newer custom version of PinMAME from VPUniverse that supports that.  You will also need to make sure you have the needed roms for those, also from VPUniverse.

VPinball and VPUniverse have the newest VPX tables, I find.

turns out the issue is, some of the backglasses I use were EXEs. If the B2S is an EXE DOF wont work.

My CPU cant handle VP10, Im seeing what upgrade options I have available. Its time like this I wish TK had more modder systems. The mobo is a LGA1156 so my best option is an i7-870 , I need to snag some more DDR3 Ram too (only 4GB in the machine)

One thing you can do for tables that run slow, is to have the B2S "skip frames", etc in it's settings.

Also, try running a table WITHOUT the B2S file and see if it runs better. (disable error popups in B2S settings so you can use DOF without a B2S backglass running). If you are using a front end like Pinball X, you can always just have a still picture for the backglass instead of a video or B2S running.

Future Pinball can only use Led-Wiz to control feedback and lighting (solenoids, RGB light, toys). I have my LED-Wiz control a Sainsmart NON-USB version for my solenoids.

Led-Wiz support has to be programmed into the script yourself for EVERY table. (unless someone else already has done it)

Not too many tables have this done already. The Getaway has it, but none of SLAMT1LT's tables have it for example.

Visual Pinball is able to have all this be automatic because of its use of the original roms and because of how DOF works with that. (Future Pinball does not use roms)

You "can" have the Future Pinball flippers and some RGB lighting controlled by using a program called DOFFX2. It allows the control of your LED-Wiz outputs by keyboard keys using DOF! I use it for Pinball FX2 and The Pinball Arcade.  Look at my Youtube channel or my PinKadia build thread for more info and a demo.

Im going to go ahead and update my project if you guys dont mind :p
No shots of the front end yet, but Im running PinballX. All the tables that werent working with force feedback now are. I had to replace the EXE backglass with a b2s backglass.

Here's an old shot of the head folded down:

I went back to silver rails, I just like em better.

Updated VpinMAME and  my ROMs to include Stern SAM tables.

(bonus shot of my wife's knees!)

Added another pin I'd buy if it came up for sale around me:

And got all the Pinball FX2 tables and backglasses up and running. Well, all the ones I own. I dont own the aliens pack or the football/soccer reskins

All thats rerally left is to add a ---fudgesicle--- ton of table and maybe improve the hardware inside a bit.

Looks great! Love how people come up with mini-pin ideas.  MUCH easier to move around that's for sure!

I recently just got VPX running in exclusive full screen, which runs soooo much better! It's a bit of a tricky setup, but its so nice seeing those tables with everything maxed out running buttery smooth like ti should (I have a gtx 960).
